On Monday April 20th, Comcast was the subject of a FCC hearing on network neutrality at the Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  The hearing was held to address complaints leveled by Free Press, Public Knowledge, the web-video company Vuze, and others, that Comcast is trying to stifle competition by blocking the delivery of rival video-on-demand services over its cable system.

Comcast ‘stacked the deck’ by packing the room with local employees, and admits that they PAID NON-EMPLOYEES TO ARRIVE EARLY AND HOLD A PLACE for Comcast personnel.  But then they try to tell us that these PAID SHILLS decided to stay and take up seats and oxygen in the room which resulted in hundreds of legitimate would be attendees being turned away.  Here are some of the RINGERS.

Comcast SHILLS at FCC 'Public' Hearing - 04/20/09

Comcast SHILLS at FCC 'Public' Hearing - 04/20/09

A number of people in the audience wore yellow highlighter marking pens on their shirts or jackets to identify them to Comcast employees coordinating the company’s appearance at the event. Comcast admits that they coordinated the employees that it brought to the hearing.

So, what exactly is Comcast so worried about?  Could it be that they feel that the FCC might actually listen to the PUBLIC?

Comcast spokeswoman Jennifer Khoury wishes that she said “Those guys that are sleeping over there…they don’t belong to us.  Now that guy on their LEFT wearing the leather jacket that is staring down the camera man with a look that says ‘If you snap that picture I’ll feed your liver to my doberman’…now THAT’S OUR GUY, so quit asking me questions and don’t F*&K WITH COMCAST.”

Here’s a ComCrap customer from Oakbrook Terrace, IL  who wanted to add phone service on top of the CATV and Internet service he was already receiving.  The salesperson said he could keep his two DVRs at no charge if he upgraded to their infamous “Triple Play” (also know as “Trouble Play”) for $179/month.  Guess what…HE FELL FOR IT!  Now about one week later, Comcast remotely cuts off the second DVR and says he has to pay another $15/month to get it working again.

$179/month!!!  People…what are you thinking?  That’s over TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR!!!  I would love to see the statistic of how many households on government assistance are subscribers!!!  How anyone can feel that they are getting any VALUE here is beyond me, but that’s another rant.

Hey Comcast, I’ve got a better package name than “Triple Play”.  You should call it “The 3-Card Monte”: Now you see it, NOW YOU DON’T.

Federal and state law require Comcast to provide public, educational and governmental programming. The cable company provides Burlington, VT  this programming through RETN and two other access management organizations.

Comcast threatened to pull the plug on the Regional Educational Technology Network in January, accusing the network of, among other charges, mishandling money. RETN receives nearly all of its funding from the cable company.

RETN contends the equipment is necessary to run any television operation. Officials say Comcast is overreaching its authority and trying to meddle in the network’s budgets.

“The authority for budgeting lies with the RETN board of directors, not Comcast,” RETN Executive Director Scott Campitelli said.

Comcast spokeswoman Laura Brubaker should have said, “We are concerned because RETN is buying silly things like a Cooling System for their Control Room, Server Backup Systems, Routers, Fiber Transmitters, Computers, and Software.  If they were spending THEIR money wisely (just like Comcast) on things like a large HDTV for their lobby, or naming rights for a concert hall, then there would not be a problem.”

In the Delaware market, Comcast has removed one of two Public stations from their basic lineup.  In order to get the other station back, customers will have to uprade their service.  It’s bad enough that Comcast charges it’s customers for commercial TV, but charging for publicly funded programming has to have even the politicians in their pocket running for cover.

To get them back, customers will need a digital set-top box. The first box will be free for expanded basic customers, but boxes for additional televisions will cost $4.95 after 12 months, Comcast reported.

“How can they take that away when it’s paid for in taxpayer dollars and public support?” said Karen Falk, a Rehoboth Beach resident who is an expanded basic customer.

Just wait Karen…pretty soon Comcast will be chargin you a “service fee” to connect your TV set to their cable.

Comcast Political Action Committee Gives Back $15K

Comcast has returned the $15,000 donated by Ed Snider (Chairman of Comcast’s Comcast-Spectacor subsidiary) to the Comcast Political Action Committee.  It turns out that “Fast Eddie” has a stake in the proposed Foxwoods Casino Philadelphia project, and Pennsylvania has a law that prohibits political donations from casino investors.  But apparently the state sees no conflict of interest in cable providers owning sports teams, because Comcast-Spectacor owns the Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers.

Watch out for the letter coming in your bill next month: “Rates are going up because of the sky-rocketing cost of buying politicians, but we’ll be adding C-SPAN to your lineup FOR FREE so you can keep an eye on these guys for us and make sure we’re getting our moneys worth.”

Comcast inked a seven-year deal for the naming rights to the New England Dodge Music Center in Hartford which will be called “Comcast Theatre”. Comcast did not disclose financial details of the agreement.

A Comcast spokesperson wishes that they said:  “This important acquisition is intended to vastly improve the Customer Service Experience.  We know how much time our customers spend ON-HOLD with our service department, so we felt a moral obligation to provide them with THE BEST MUSIC their money can buy while waiting for a live representitive to assist them.  This will help to soften the blow when they eventually figure out that their best bet to get their problems fixed is to switch providers”.

Steve is a Comcast subscriber in Minnesota who has adroitly unraveled the true intent of the 250GB cap that Comcast has placed on home Internet service.  His post prompted a response from David Diers, VP of Advanced Services for Comcast Twin Cities…so it must have hit a nerve!

Diers continually fell back on Comcast’s position and argued that only a tiny fraction of customers even came close to the 250GB bandwidth caps (and that they at Comcast are being incredibly generous with such a huge cap)

Steve responded with “I tried to focus on the “control over tv” theme in the post and make the point that the rapid adoption of sites like YouTube and Hulu — and the increased use of media centers by everyday consumers of TV — is the threat they’re trying to stave off.”

I hate to say “I told you so”, but let me refer you back to the Interview with Steve Burke post here at CUT-THE-CABLE.  Their intent has been clearly stated all along…just not in the mainstream.

The New Comcast Manifesto: “We believe in a free market (unless you are a Comcast Customer in which case we will POP A CAP on yo azz).”
