Blockbuster has jumped in bed with Comcast and should they produce any offspring you can be sure that the combined DNA of these two companies will spell nothing but trouble with a capital “T” for consumers.

A talking head for Comcast describes the deal as a marketing agreement where Comcast will be able to offer discounts on Blockbuster’s DVD-By-Mail service to certain Comcast customers. As part of the agreement, Comcast will not take a cut of any related revenue, but will provide deeper discounting for customers who decide to take advantage of the Blockbuster DVD-By-Mail service. It wasn’t immediately clear how much the deal might be worth to Blockbuster.

“It’s not about a financial benefit, but about targeting (our) the products to Blockbuster customers,” the Comcast talking head said.

As part of the model, Blockbuster stores have been promoting Comcast’s triple-play (otherwise known as the “3-Card Monte”) services.

Here’s the real scoop folks…Blockbuster is in big financial trouble and is grasping at straws.  Comcast sees an opportunity to get some cheap advertising through Blockbuster, but mostly they want their customer list.   When Blockbuster goes bankrupt about 18-months from now, Comcast will swoop down on all of the former Blockbuster customers with a “teaser” deal that they can’t refuse.

It is no different than a street corner crack dealer handing out free samples to the neighborhood kids to get them hooked so they can score the BIG BUCKS on the back end.

Verizon Accuses Comcast of False Advertising

Verizon says that Comcast’s ad claimimng that ”a comparable triple-play bundle of TV, phone and Internet service from Verizon can cost $400 more a year, after promotions expire, than one from Comcast” is outright false and Verizon would challenge the advertisements’ truthfulness through the National Advertising Division of the Councils of Better Business Bureaus if Comcast failed to change them.

Comcast responded with the “They did it first!” defense.

Regardless of all of this BS, remember that this is nothing more than SMOKE & MIRRORS.  There is no real competition between these companies.  The higher-ups of all of these companies colluded long ago against the consumers that they will not compete on price!  That would eat into their profits.  It’s all about market share now.

The only way to bust their model is to CUT-THE-CABLE, (and have a nice day!)

Here’s a ComCrap customer from Oakbrook Terrace, IL  who wanted to add phone service on top of the CATV and Internet service he was already receiving.  The salesperson said he could keep his two DVRs at no charge if he upgraded to their infamous “Triple Play” (also know as “Trouble Play”) for $179/month.  Guess what…HE FELL FOR IT!  Now about one week later, Comcast remotely cuts off the second DVR and says he has to pay another $15/month to get it working again.

$179/month!!!  People…what are you thinking?  That’s over TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR!!!  I would love to see the statistic of how many households on government assistance are subscribers!!!  How anyone can feel that they are getting any VALUE here is beyond me, but that’s another rant.

Hey Comcast, I’ve got a better package name than “Triple Play”.  You should call it “The 3-Card Monte”: Now you see it, NOW YOU DON’T.

Here’s an oldie but goodie at the Washington Post

Mona “The Hammer” Shaw was outraged when she went to her local Comcast office and asked to speak with a customer service manager, waited 2-hours just to be told the manager has left for the day…good-bye.

“So, after stewing over it all weekend, on the following Monday, she went downstairs, got Don’s claw hammer and said: “C’mon, honey, we’re going to Comcast.”

Hammer time: Shaw storms in the company’s office. BAM! She whacks the keyboard of the customer service rep. BAM! Down goes the monitor. BAM! She totals the telephone. People scatter, scream, cops show up and what does she do? POW! A parting shot to the phone!   “They cuffed me right then,” she says.”

Mona, you are a hero and your story will be the first in our new HALL OF FAME category.  CUT-THE-CABLE salutes you!
